Why Do I Crave Sugar?

An enormous percentage of women and men crave sugar, refined carbohydrates, or alcohol.  In most cases, these food cravings are not true eating disorders, but instead are signs of hormonal imbalance caused by a lack of healthy nutrition and other barriers to healing.

Allowing the cycle of sugar cravings to continue over a long enough period of time creates the possibility of serious disease, including the most common causes of death in the United States today.

The Road From Sugar to Weight Gain, Depression & Fatigue

Sugar cravings mean that the body has its signals mixed up.   When we are exhausted or blue, we have low blood sugar and/or low serotonin, and the body signals the brain that it needs a pick-me-up.   Serotonin is our basic feel-good hormone.  If serotonin is low, we feel sad or depressed.   And hormonal imbalance or weak digestion can lead to low serotonin.  Unfortunately, sugars and simple carbohydrates release a short burst of serotonin — we feel good for a moment, but soon return to our low-serotonin state — then crave more sugar and simple carbohydrates. It’s a downward spiral.

The problem truly begins when you regularly consume refined carbohydrates, as your body will start to increase its output of insulin to compensate for the higher blood sugar levels.  Over time this causes progressively increasing levels of insulin and resistance to the effects of insulin.

This increasing insulin resistance then develops into a vicious cycle.  It directly causes your insulin levels to rise even further, and high insulin levels will trigger areas in your brain that will cause you to crave sweets.    Insulin resistance leads directly to weight gain, diabetes, and heart disease.

If you have followed various diets (the bookstores are full of these!) or gone on a low-fat diet, you may have unintentionally made the problem worse.  Each time you lose a significant amount of weight and gain it back, it gets harder to lose it the next time due to changes in metabolism (the rate at which you convert food into energy).

Another cause of food cravings is adrenal fatigue. If you are under a great deal of stress, or suffer from insomnia or sleep deprivation, you are probably exhausted much of the time. This leads to adrenal fatigue or outright adrenal exhaustion, which in turn signals the body it needs a pick-me-up. You may resort to sugar or carbohydrate snacks or coffee during the day and carbohydrates or alcohol at night, all of which make the problem worse in the long run.

Women who blame themselves for their food cravings only worsen their mood and increase their need for serotonin. That’s when a pattern of emotional eating can develop. Remember, there are biological causes of sugar cravings, which means the root problem is not a weak will -- it is more likely inadequate nutrition.

  1. To reduce sugar cravings and the clinical picture that goes with them (hormonal imbalances, fatigue, poor sleep and poor memory) the body needs real support that leads to healing.  Clinically, we have seen hundreds of women and men regain the energy they had in their 20s through a tailored nutritional healing program that follows three basic steps. First, we determine any nutritional deficiencies that are contributing to poor health and gradually, over time, we improve them.

  2. Next we determine if any barriers to healing exist.  Barriers to healing include food allergies, immune deficiencies, and metal and chemical stresses on the body.  If barriers to healing exist and are not handled, all healing techniques are less effective.   If you have any barriers to healing, this may be why you haven’t achieved optimal health even though you’ve worked at it.

  3. Finally, we design a healing program that works in the correct order.  Consider that if you cut your hand you would not bandage the cut, then put on an ointment and then clean it.  That wouldn’t make sense.  There are natural laws of healing that apply to any system of the body.   We work with these natural laws of healing so that the program “feels right.”
